Product Features

HITS offers several options for Michigan Medicine desktop, laptop, and tablet computers. Each has the software tools, security features, and management features that enable a reliable, secure, and supportable computing environment. Choose from five managed computing options:


When contacting HITS for support, you will be asked for the TermID of your computer. All HITS managed computing devices are assigned a unique eight character terminal ID (TermID). Generally, managed computing devices have a physical tag attached to the outside of the computer, also known as an asset tag, featuring the TermID. They can also be identified in the operating system settings. 

Microsoft Windows

Windows 10 is deployed across Michigan Medicine.

Enterprise Software Applications

As part of the managed general compute environment, some software packages are installed or available for installation through HITS.

Microsoft Office

Michigan Medicine uses the Microsoft Office Suite of applications, including:

  • Word

  • Excel

  • PowerPoint

  • Access

  • Outlook

  • OneNote

  • Publisher

Microsoft Visio and Microsoft Project are not part of the suite and licenses for these applications must be purchased separately. Information and request forms can be found on the ITS Microsoft Products page.

In July 2021, all Core devices were updated with Microsoft Office 365 unless a workflow or other application requires an older version of Office.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Michigan Medicine faculty and staff who use a managed general compute device have access to the following Adobe Creative Cloud products:

  • Acrobat Pro DC

  • Photoshop

  • Illustrator

  • InDesign

  • Dreamweaver

Because U-M is an Adobe Creative Campus, individuals and departments should not purchase or manually install this software independently.

Software Procurement

Requesting Software & App List

Software that is not included in the managed general compute standard software needs to be purchased by your department. Health Information & Technology Services (HITS) will then assist in having that software packaged and available for distribution in the Michigan Medicine network.

To verify that the software you need is available as part of the managed general compute standard software, please see the Michigan Medicine list of Packaged Applications (app list) on the Knowledgebase.

To request a software application that has already been packaged and is available according to the Michigan Medicine Packaged Applications List, you need to submit a customer service request (CSR). Please go to Get Help to see all the ways to get in touch with the HITS Service Desk.

If it is not on the list, Desktop software may be procured in a variety of ways*:

  1. ITS: Departmental Purchases

  2. ITS Software Licensing and Distribution: Licensed software products for use on university-owned computers

*All software purchases must be made in compliance with SPG 601.03-3

Once the purchase has been made (or if it is already on the available list), contact HITS for implementation by going to Get Help and submitting an online request, or by contacting the HITS Service Desk.

Software Requests for personal use on Non-University Owned Machines

Application Software or Application Systems

If you or your department has a need for new, large-scale application software or systems:

  • Departmental staff or faculty members contact their department administrator with their needs.

  • Hospital department administrators may take these requirements forward to a HITS representative to determine next steps.

  • HITS will assist the department in completing the need processes, such as RFI (Request for Information), RFP (Request for Proposal), and capital funding requests.

For products over $5,000, you will need to follow the Capital Budget Office's process for securing capital funding.


Anti-Virus Protection

SentinelOne, sometimes abbreviated as S1, is the primary anti-malware software used on University-owned machines.

Administrative Access

Users of managed general computing devices have the option to request administrative access to their machine. Contact the HITS Service Desk to find out more by going to Get Help.

Internet Browsers


Edge Chromium is the default web browser used on Windows managed computing  devices. Google Chrome and Internet Explorer (IE) are also available on Windows 10 devices. Some general computing devices remain on earlier versions of IE because they use clinical applications that are not yet certified to work with Edge Chromium.  


Safari web browser is the default web browser on CoreMac and iOS devices. Google Chrome and Edge Chromium are also available.

NOTE: Security policies may redirect a website to open in a different browser depending on the nature of the website. The “Google Chrome Legacy Browser Support” component may push users into Google Chrome when they navigate to Google websites from within IE. Similarly, visiting a number of clinical websites (or ones ending in “”) will force users into IE from Google Chrome.
