"Own Your Upgrade" Self-serve Microsoft Windows upgrades now underway

10/28/2021

Now through January 2022, some (but not all) Michigan Medicine PC users will see notifications requesting them to download and install a required upgrade to their Microsoft Windows operating system.

Users who receive one of these requests can “Own Their Upgrade” by clicking:

  • Start Now” to begin the upgrade sequence immediately.
  • Snooze” to delay the upgrade to a time that’s more convenient.
  • Not now” to delay the upgrade temporarily. The upgrade prompt will disappear but will return the next day, and so on, until you select either “Start Now” or “Snooze.”

Background:

These Windows upgrades are required annually — the same way most smartphone users typically upgrade their device’s operating system software periodically.

HITS is asking everyone who receives a request to take a few minutes to complete their upgrade.

“Downloading and installing these required Microsoft Windows updates is essential to keep the Michigan Medicine IT environment healthy and up-to-date, and to keep our users’ devices running smoothly,” said John McPhall, HITS senior director for enterprise technology and services.

“By providing flexibility, and by enabling our customers to choose when they want to install, we’re encouraging people to ‘own’ their upgrades — and making them less disruptive and more convenient,” said McPhall.
