Microsoft Teams

The collaborative workspace application will replace Skype for Business

Microsoft Teams is now available to all Michigan Medicine faculty, staff, and students. This secure digital workspace brings together people, conversation, and content, enabling more efficient productivity and collaboration – especially in a flexible first work environment.

Teams seamlessly combines chat, video/voice, calendar, file sharing, and many other features into one application. Use Teams to share and collaborate with colleagues on Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneDrive files – or conduct video calls.

Teams will replace Skype for Business as Michigan Medicine’s strategic chat tool. Skype for Business will be turned off in March 2022. Persistent chat users can find the same functionality (and more!) in Teams.

How do I access Microsoft Teams?

  • CoreImage computers: The application will appear in your Start menu.

  • Web Browser: You can also access Teams via any web browser on any device by going to office.com. Sign in with your @med email address and Michigan Medicine (Level-2) password. A VPN connection is not required.

  • Mobile devices: Download the Teams mobile app from the iOS Apple Store or Google Play Store. You will need Microsoft Intune installed on your device in order to use the mobile app.

Where can I learn more about using Microsoft Teams?

There are several options for self-paced training:

HITS will also offer virtual instructor-led training courses throughout 2022 (search ‘M365’ in MLearning to see available courses). Additional course dates are added monthly, so check back periodically. If courses are full, please utilize the excellent resources listed above.

How is Microsoft Teams different from Slack or Zoom?

Collaboration and communication tools like Teams, Slack, and Zoom are key to any flexible first workplace. While you can use any of these tools to chat, call, or videoconference, Teams integrates with the full Microsoft 365 suite, including your email, calendar, and Office applications, allowing you to quickly see a colleague’s availability or collaborate in real-time on a PowerPoint file – all within one application! See a full feature comparison

Can I store sensitive data in Microsoft Teams?

The Michigan Medicine instance of Microsoft 365, including Teams, was designed for high data sensitivity, including Protected Health Information (PHI). See the U-M Safe Computing Sensitive Data Guide for more details.

How can I create a new “team” in Microsoft Teams?

In Microsoft Teams, teams are groups of people brought together for work, projects, or common interests. At Michigan Medicine, teams must also be active directory groups. If you are the owner of an active directory group, you can use the group management tool to turn it into a team. For a new group, submit an active directory requestComplete instructions
