MiShare Replacement

MiShare is Michigan Medicine’s secure file transfer system. The current vendor software used as the architecture for MiShare is no longer in line with best practices.

Timeline: Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) is in the process of replacing the software in accordance with the University of Michigan’s procurement process. Updates will be posted to this site throughout the project duration. 

Current state of MiShare:

The following is in effect at the direction of the CISO/HIPAA Security Officer: 

  • Any existing automated processes using MiShare are at no immediate risk of being shut down and can continue to use MiShare. 
  • Any new automated process requests for MiShare will not be granted. 
  • As of December 15, 2023 - Ad-hoc sharing of information using MiShare is no longer be permitted. 

What can be used for ad-hoc sharing?

In the short term, for ad-hoc sharing of information, the recommended mechanisms are:

  • Michigan Medicine’s version (requires Level 2 credentials) of Microsoft365 tools (SharePoint Online, OneDrive, etc.), for secure file storage and communications
  • UM Dropbox (requires Level 1 credentials) when sharing and storing sensitive data classified as High.
