Later this month, Michigan Medicine will implement Clinical Enterprise Imaging (CEI) — a program consisting of multiple projects aimed at improving the display and sharing of images across the institution.
Why is Michigan Medicine making this change?
“Michigan Medicine has outgrown the capabilities of its imaging system over time through growth and through the addition of non-radiology system storage,” said Kenneth Buckwalter, M.D., professor of radiology. “Performance and reliability have become problematic, and the system architecture is challenging for us to support.”
So the organization is introducing a replacement, eUnity (WebPACS), which will improve the display of diagnostic images across the enterprise.
This project will replace the existing systems with a new common infrastructure, allowing staff to view radiology images at go-live launched from MiChart. Cardiology and ophthalmology images will follow at a later launch date. Ultimately, the Enterprise Archive will store many different “ology” image types.
The incoming Sectra PACS is known for its rock-solid reliability and the architecture is compatible with Michigan Medicine IT standards, simplifying support. Additionally, using a single vendor for enterprise imaging and PACS will eliminate incompatibilities between systems and streamline management.
“We are very excited to deploy these systems to ensure we have a firm foundation upon which to build our systemwide imaging infrastructure,” Buckwalter said. “Making sure our clinical staff have access to any image, anywhere, anytime is our ultimate goal.”
Training
MiChart users launch images via Merge iConnect (WebPACS) andwill need eUnity (WebPACS) training. eUnity (WebPACS) consists of self-directed training options — including an MLearning module, tips sheets and videos. You can view the training resources at michmed.org/CEI.
In addition, to prepare for eUnity (WebPACS), clinicians are invited to virtual drop-in sessions beginning Jan. 11. The sessions will serve as an open Q&A.

What does this mean?
- On Sunday, Jan. 16: eUnity (WebPACS) will replace the current enterprise viewer Merge iConnect (WebPACS) that launches from MiChart.
- Sectra PACS will replace the current McKesson Radiology PACS System over a phased rollout:
- Sunday, Jan. 16: Begin sending radiology images to Sectra PACS
- Sunday, Jan. 23: First wave of radiologists converted to Sectra PACS
- Sunday, Jan. 30: Second and final wave of radiologists converted to Sectra PACS
