Michigan Medicine is upgrading its existing Microsoft SharePoint 2016 environment to SharePoint Online, a cloud-based service that will provide new opportunities for teams to share and manage content, knowledge and applications. Pilots and testing are happening now, and HITS plans to introduce SharePoint Online across all of Michigan Medicine beginning in early 2021.

In addition to significantly improving the experience for Michigan Medicine SharePoint users, this upgrade is also an important first step toward adopting Microsoft 365 — a “digital workplace” suite of tools and services that will provide users with powerful new ways to communicate and collaborate.

Upcoming learning opportunities

To help existing and new users prepare to leverage SharePoint Online’s new capabilities, HITS is partnering with Microsoft to offer the following learning opportunities:

MS365-10013 Microsoft SharePoint 100

This course focuses on SharePoint team sites. Attendees will learn how to share and manage content, find information, and collaborate across their organization. This introductory course includes how to create SharePoint team sites, manage permissions for secure document storage and collaboration, and harness their collective knowledge content.

MS365-10001 Microsoft SharePoint 200

This course expands on more advanced features of SharePoint sites, focusing on site ownership and architecture. Attendees will learn about sharing and permissions, workflow management, content types, and the various site architecture components required to build  effective team sites.

Additional learning opportunities will be available soon, so stay tuned for future announcements.

New site development freeze

To facilitate the organization’s transition to SharePoint Online, there will be a temporary freeze on new site builds beginning Dec. 1. Once we begin provisioning new sites, they will be built and managed in SharePoint Online.

If you wish to request a site, please submit a SharePoint Site Request with your objectives, site type, and names of the business owner and site administrators. You will also review and agree to the HITS SharePoint governance terms and conditions.

New sites are provisioned using a basic template. Site administrators may customize their site using SharePoint’s extensive functionality. HITS will schedule an introductory meeting with the site owner and administrators to review roles and responsibilities and to recommend training options.

Community of practice

HITS facilitates a community of practice for SharePoint administrators and aficionados to discuss best practices, share news, access resources and explore other related topics. Learn more and join the community.
